Extra financial assistance for small businesses struggling to cope with the extra costs of maternity benefits should be made available by the government, according to business leaders and the Equal Opportunities Commission.
According to the Federation of Small Businesses “Small employers face a disproportionate cost burden in recruiting and training temporary cover for maternity leave.”
The campaign calls for maternity benefit aid to be provided for “micro-employers” with less than ten staff to cover the costs. It is also required that the Government pay for advice on maternity issues to help small business employers who usually have little or no experience dealing with pregnant staff.
