Printers at work pose serious health threats

Office laser printers could pose a serious health risk experts warned yesterday.

The team of Australian scientists said that they could damage lungs as much as smoke from cigarettes. Their probe into dozens of laser printers found nearly a third emit potentially dangerous levels of toner into the air. These ultra fine particles can enter the lungs and cause lasting damage.

Experts are now calling for printers to come with a health warning. The study, which was published in a US science journal, was carried out at the Queensland University of Technology. Professor Lidia Morawska said: “Effects can range from respiratory irritation to severe illness such as cardiovascular problems or cancer.”
