Ian Lucas MP praises archaeological site work by Tarmac Ltd

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has praised the work of a local quarrying business in helping bring a vital archaeological find to light.

He was talking after visiting the Neolithic site which is over 4,000 years old and was discovered on land at Borras, near Wrexham, as a result of quarrying operations by Tarmac Ltd.

Mr Lucas said: “It really was a fascinating visit and I was very impressed with Tarmac’s attitude towards the site.

“Talking with the archaeologists on site, they told me that the site is a major discovery and among the best of its kind in North Wales. The discovery of the site and the large amount of pottery found there will really help to shed light on the Neolithic era in North Wales and is a groundbreaking discovery.

“I also believe that the way Tarmac have provided vital support for the work at recording the discovery has proved vital and they should be commended for this. After all, as I was told yesterday, the site would not have been discovered if it had not been for the extraction process at Borras.

“I believe that we should do all we can to record important discoveries such as this locally and will be working with the relevant groups in the coming months to make sure this happens.”

And Tarmac Manager – Estates and Geology North West, Richard Hulse. added: ““We are delighted to have facilitated the discovery of a site of such important archaeological significance during the course of our operations.

”This find demonstrates how close co-operation between Tarmac and our consultant archaeologists has enabled us to record and assess the site as part of our environmental management commitments.”
